Bon , on l'attendait de pied ferme ce double live posthume du Lutin que la plupart d'entre nous connaissaient les boots. Présenté tout d'abord dans un magnifique digipack , doté d'un livret quelque peu sommaire et des deux passes des deux passages de Dio au célèbre festival dont on se demande encore la raison pour laquelle il a changé de nom puisqu'il se nomme désormais le Download Festival. En 83 , Dio est au sommet grâce à la sortie de Holy Diver qui ne contient que des morceaux d'une qualité rarement atteinte avec notamment Stand Up And Shout et Holy Diver même si d'un autre côté , il était risqué d'entreprendre une carrière solo , celle-ci ayant été jusqu'ici plus ou moins dirigée par une personnalité plus forte que la sienne , Ritchie Blackmore dans Rainbow et Tony Iommi dans Black Sabbath. Le Lutin , en ce 20 août 1983 , est en état de grâce et ce , grâce à sa voix si chaleureuse et si puissante mais aussi grâce à la performance guitaristique de Vivian Campbell. Les titres de Holy Diver sont globalement bien représentés puisque sur 12 morceaux (en fait 13 puisqu' Evil Eyes , même s'il figure sur The Last In Line fut joué en avant-première en fin de set mais n'apparaît pas sur ce double live). Bref , un concert d'anthologie.
Le concert de 87 , quant à lui , montre un Dio reconnu de tous , lorgnant de temps à autre vers des contrées Hard FM notamment sur Rock And Roll Children. On y entend pour la première fois des versions live de Naked In The Rain , All The Fools Sailed Away et Dream Evil. Ce que l'on pourrait peut-être reprocher concernant ce concert de 87 , serait sans doute cette approche medleyesque de Long Live Rock'n' Roll / The Last In Line / Children Of The Sea (à peine reconnaissable d'ailleurs). A noter aussi l'absence de We Rock interprété aussi en fin de set. C'est sans doute le live que tout le monde attendait , même si l'on se rend bien compte qu'il s'agit de deux époques bien différentes de notre Lutin préféré qui nous manque véritablement.

Des concerts-tribute et une autobiographie sont respectivement programmés en 2011 et en 2012.

Ronnie James Dio’s autobiography will be published in 2012, it has been revealed.

Ronnie’s wife Wendy revealed the news to The Blairing Out With Eric Blair Show in the US, where she also confirmed that there will be a couple of tribute concerts to her late husband.

She also revealed a little more about progress of the Ronnie James Dio “Stand Up And Shout” Cancer Fund.

"We set the fund up because I wanted to make sure that if a kid gave me $10, it was going to the right place and not going into some fat cat's pocket. So we've raised a lot of money — over $300,000. We gave $100,000 this week, actually, to T.J. Martell for cancer research and especially for colon cancer and stomach cancer. I met all the researchers and they've invited me to go to Nashville whenever I want to see exactly where the money is going. We're giving another $100,000 to M.D. Anderson [Cancer Center in Houston], which is the hospital that Ronnie was at, the treatment center, and they're gonna put it in Ronnie's name and it will be research for stomach cancer with Ronnie's doctor, the oncologist that treated him — he's got a research going on to try and find a cure for stomach cancer. We've got a lot of things coming up. We've got a lot of guitars that we've been collecting, autographed guitars from everyone, and we're gonna have a big auction, probably in March, at Christie's or Sotheby's. We have to raise a lot money from that. We're also gonna do a tribute CD with Ronnie's friends, which is mostly everybody in the music business, and we're going to do a concert, probably in October or November of next year — one in New York, one in London and one in L.A."

"I think it'll be a lot of Ronnie's friends [performing]. I've already got some people lined up, but I can't say right now, but I will [announce] it early [next] year. I think it will just be Ronnie's music being played, living on, his legacy living on, [with] proceeds going to cancer [research], to help [find a cure for] cancer, and with his friends. And just a celebration of life."

In terms of the forthcoming RJD autobiography, Wendy revealed that it will be finished next year before it is released in 2012.

"The book is three-quarters written. I'm gonna finish it. I have a book deal already. I have to finish it by June, and it will come out in early 2012."

Dio Vs. Ozzy


J'ai eu une carrière musicale longue et variée, en ayant chanté dans de grands groupes comme Rainbow et Dio, mais je dois dire que mon expérience préférée vient de la période où j'ai remplacé Ozzy Osbourne en tant que chanteur de Black Sabbath.

Personnellement, j'ai le sentiment que Black Sabbath avait perdu toute son énergie lorsque je les ai rejoints. Leur dernier album à succès remontait à quelques années et les problèmes d'Ozzy commençaient à être notoires. Ozzy m'a haï pour cela, pourtant je ne me suis pas amené pour lui piquer son job. J'avais le projet d'enregistrer un morceau avec Tony Iommi déjà plusieurs mois avant le départ d'Ozzy.

Juste avant de rejoindre le groupe, j'ai eu une rencontre avec Tony et il m'a demandé: "Est-ce que je peux te faire écouter un truc?" et il m'a joué un riff. J'ai dit: "Donne-moi cinq minutes" et je suis revenu avec quelques paroles, et cette chanson est devenue "Children of the Sea."

L'instant d'après, Tony m'a dit: "Je n'ai plus envie de jouer avec Ozzy, Ronnie, c'est avec toi que je veux jouer."

On s'est mis à composer le classique "Heaven And Hell", qui a remis le groupe en selle, tant commercialement qu'artistiquement.

Bien entendu, ça a fait de moi un petit merdeux aux yeux d'Ozzy, et rapidement Geezer a quitté le groupe à son tour. Il avait des problèmes personnels à cette époque. Ils sont tous un peu spéciaux, mais Geezer en particulier n'était pas heureux du fait que le départ d'Ozzy était un traumatisme pour lui..

On a joué notre premier concert dans un Colysée rempli de 102.000 personnes et je dois dire que ça s'est plutôt bien passé. Bon, bien sûr, j'ai eu droit à quelques doigts pointés vers le ciel de la part des fidèles d'Ozzy, mais je n'ai pas laissé ça me troubler. Même si j'ai plus de talent vocal qu'Ozzy, il était quand même une icône musicale.

Peu après ce concert, Bill Ward a quitté le groupe à la veille d'un concert à Denver, en disant qu'il ne supportait plus de voler (en avion). Aujourd'hui, après 26 changements de membres, Black Sabbath est plus célèbre et a plus de succès que jamais auparavant.

Le truc, c'est que je ne les envie pas du tout. C'est pas comme si, en voyant une Ferrari me dépasser, je disais "J'espère que ce connard va se ratatiner contre un arbre" Je me dis plutôt: "Cool, j'aimerais bien m'offrir une bagnole pareille un jour."

Les dernières phrases vont dans le sens de ce que disent les gens qui ont connus le Lutin. C'est plutôt plaisant de lire des choses positives.

Quand aux comparaisons vocales entre Ozzy et Ronnie, y a pas photo. Mais il n'y a pas que la voix qui compte dans le monde du Rock. Le charisme est aussi important (plus?).

Je suis en train de réécouter le concert du Breaking Sound Festival du 30/8/84 (tournée The Last In Line) auquel j'ai assisté. Vocalement comme musicalement, tout était véritablement parfait avec une setlist de feu. Je me souviens d'une version particulièrement excellente d'Egypt non pas enchainée à Children Of The Sea comme sur le live Evil Or Divine-Live In New York mais à Holy Diver.
La seule défaillance vocale qu'il m'ait été entendre et encore s'agirait-il d'une défaillance vocale, ce serait, à mon humble avis, sur le double live Holy Diver Live daté de 2006 où le Lutin apparaît fatigué. Au rythme des années, la voix avait perdu un octave et cela peut s'entendre sur le double live de Heaven And Hell intitulé Neon Nights-Live At Wacken mais globalement, sa voix est demeurée toujours aussi belle et envoûtante.

C'était ce que l'on peut appeler un "chanteur" et ej crois qu'il aurait eu un succès plus large s'il avait opté pour un style musical plus grand public.
D'ailleurs, "Love Is All" aurait pu lui apporter ce public si les gens avaient connu son nom et s'il était apparu sur la video. Mais celle-ci a été un grand succès et je serais curieux de connaitre son nombre de passage sur les chaines françaises à son époque.

Ronnie James Dio, comme Freddie Mercury, ont été deux énormes chanteurs. Mais j'ai toujours un doute sur le fait qu'ils soient remplacés un jour.

Previously unreleased early recordings from Ronnie James Dio have just been put out.

They all come from 1971, when Dio was in Elf, and are on an album titled And Before Elf…There Were Elves. This was released by Niji Entertainment, and has a special 3-D cover.

Zach Shaw of Metal Insider recently conducted an interview with legendary drummer Vinny Appice (DIO, BLACK SABBATH, HEAVEN & HELL, KILL DEVIL HILL). A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

Metal Insider: You previously admitted that it would be "hard" to turn down the opportunity to play with BLACK SABBATH again. I hate to be so direct, but have SABBATH contacted you about possibly filling in for Bill Ward, or at least for the shows they have planned so far?

Vinny: No, I haven't heard a peep. And that's why, even when I'm communicating with Tony [Iommi, guitar], it's on a friendship level. I never write in, "Hey man, what's happening?! Hey how you feeling? Feeling good? Oh, good! Hey, what's going on with the band? I'd love to do that!" I never do that. I never did that with SABBATH at all, or with DIO. I've always been asked to be in a band. I'm not that kind of guy to hound somebody and say "Hey I could really use the money or the gig!" [laughs]. I never did that… But nobody's said anything, and at this point, it's cool. I can understand because we also did four years of HEAVEN & HELL. If I was in the band, it would be like Ozzy [Osbourne] touring with HEAVEN & HELL. People could take it possibly as that, even though it's bigger than that. And then there's all of these political things involved. But with SABBATH, you can never figure out what's going on anyway. So at the end of the day, who knows what happens. There might be a call going "OK, this guy is not working out, would you maybe come back?" That's what's happened in the past. I'd like to see Bill do it. I think Bill being in the band makes it the original band, and how many original bands are left from that era that had such influence? So I'd love to see Bill in there. I love Bill, and I'd love to see the original band. And that's what the fans want to see obviously.

Metal Insider: I hate to press further on this, but if they were to call you asking to join them, what would you say?

Vinny: That's a hard one, because my heart's in KILL DEVIL HILL and I want this band to be successful. And the SABBATH thing, it's hard to turn down something so legendary, like "Hey, you want to play on the next or last BLACK SABBATH album?" It's part of history. So it would be hard to turn down. I would just make it work with both bands coexisting. If I had to do that, I would do it. But maybe it would help KILL DEVIL HILL. Maybe we'd open the tour, if they were touring? If it was like this is going to take the next three years and you can't do anything else, then I would have to think about it. But my main thing is KILL DEVIL HILL. The SABBATH thing, that would be hard for anybody to turn it down. And I'm not talking about money or anything, I'm just talking about being a part of the history of the band and rock. It would be a great opportunity for anybody. But it's not even going to happen. They've gone this long, they're obviously playing and writing. I heard that they were in the studio by March. I don't know who's doing it. I heard maybe Tommy [Clufetos] from Ozzy's band doing it. But I must say this, it was really funny reading all the Internet stuff because when Bill came out [with his statement], people were writing in going "Vinny should do it! Vinny's the next in line!" Then people go "Fuck Vinny! He doesn't belong up there! Bill should be up there!" Then all of a sudden Tommy's name came up, they were going "Fuck Tommy! He doesn't deserve to be up there! Vinny should do it!" It just went down the line. And I was cracking up, like "Damn!" You can't win or lose.

Metal Insider: That's one of the big downsides of the Internet. You just can't win sometimes.

Vinny: Nah, you can't win. Things get out on Blabbermouth, people commenting. People like to rag on people. That's what happens. There's some cool people that make sense and write cool things, but then there's people that just want to vent their anger. You've got to read it with a grain of salt. If it's good, you go "Cool," and if they tell you [that] you suck, you go "Cool." [laughs] You can't let it affect you.

Metal Insider: As you touched upon earlier, you've had the chance to work with a broad range of musicians, from Ronnie James Dio to John Lennon. Is there one particular artist that you worked with who really made an impact on you?

Vinny: It would have to be Ronnie. Ronnie was an incredible person, and I loved that guy. I was fifteen years or so younger than Ronnie, and he was like a father figure to me. He was smart, an extremely bright, sharp person, creative. I watched him a lot. I tried to learn from him. He taught me a lot of things, and he was just really influential in my life. And besides being one of the greatest singers in rock, if not the, he was a cool guy to start at a young age with. He was such a professional, and just seeing him go out onstage and belt it out no matter what happened before or after the show. Whether he's feeling good or not feeling good, he went out and he just killed it. And the way he treated his fans, he loved his fans, and it was just about the fans and the music. A true die-hard person, and it was amazing to be around something like that.
