Nearly three decades after its initial release in 1984, Street Talk, the debut solo album from Journey lead singer Steve Perry, has been meticulously remastered for a new generation of rock fans who are rediscovering the sonic wonders of vinyl.
The RIAA double-platinum classic, featuring the #1 single “Oh Sherrie” (and follow-up hits “Foolish Heart,” “I Believe,” “She's Mine” and “Strung Out”) will be available as an audiophile 180-gram LP in original artwork, starting November 1, 2011, through Columbia/Legacy, a division of Sony Music Entertainment. The LP will also come with an exclusive free bonus download of the specially mastered-for-vinyl digital files.
As many long time fans remember, Street Talk was one of the most successful albums of the original MTV era. The classic video for “Oh Sherrie” - in which Steve lampoons the high-concept video making that was popular at the time - became a memorable touchstone on its own, marking one of the first times an artist broke the standard album-version formula of early MTV. Two other videos, “Foolish Heart” and “Strung Out” followed, with Perry showing his varied roots – namely Soul and Rock music – as well as poking fun at the industry that was rapidly making him a household name.
For the new remastering, Steve worked at long-time industry standard The Mastering Lab in Ojai, CA – using the original master tapes – with engineer Robert Hadley to achieve what he feels is the definitive vinyl version of the album.
“I started with a pristine 24bit/96khz transfer of the original stereo mix and went from there. We used Pro Tools to bring out some of the subtle frequencies and moments in the original mixes that, in the old world of live analog hands-on console mixing would get compromised. Now we can take our time and really make the original tracks shine. This hybrid of analog and digital is, in my opinion, the wave of the future. The vinyl pressings also sound fantastic! The RTI pressing plant really knows how to take the lacquers we created and press some amazing audiophile-quality vinyl. Nouvel album le 5 octobre intitulé Traces :

STEVE PERRY will release his brand new 10 track studio album 'Traces' on October 5 worldwide via Fantasy Records (a division of Concord Records/UMG)

I was fortunate enough to get a secure audio stream of the new Steve Perry album ‘Traces’, thanks to Universal. Below are my first impressions, written while listening to the album for the very first time. A full feature review will appear here in due course and in the upcoming issue of Fireworks Magazine.

01. No Erasin' 04:07

I’m still enjoying the lead track and first single 'No Erasin'. Immediately memorable and how good is it to hear this voice again? So we've all heard the song...what's next is THE question!

02. We're Still Here 04:06
Writers: Steve Perry, Brian West

'We're Still Here' is the second track, written with Brian West. It's a ballad as expected. It is a very smooth, moody ballad with a more direct and unfiltered lead vocal. The chorus isn't big, but it's cool. Laid back and textured with modern production effects. Steve sounds great. Soul harmonies pop up here and there.

03. Most Of All 04:23
Writers: Steve Perry, Randy Goodrum

'Most Of All' is another very sparse, soft and smooth ballad, this time lead primarily by Steve's voice and a grand piano. The chorus lifts tempo slightly as does Steve's voice. I'm guessing this is going to take some time to get to know but will be a favorite. It is a very smooth track and not unlike Strange Medicine's slower moments, a nice guitar solo and plenty of soul.

04. No More Cryin' 04:29
Writers: Dan Wilson, Steve Perry

'No More Cryin' is another ballad, but at least all 3 so far have each had a different style. This one is more bluesy with a touch of Motown to it. The chorus lifts & has some modern styled guitar riffing. Co-written with Dan Wilson, this is going to be another highlight.

05. In The Rain 04:06

'In The Rain' is written by Steve & David Spreng. It has starts off as another slow piano ballad, with a warm, soulful vocal and here comes some orchestration... It is very sparse...almost no percussion, just piano and vocal. Some great vocals here.

06. Sun Shines Gray 03:57
Writers: Steve Perry, John 5, Thom Flowers

'Sun Shines Grey' is co-written with John 5 and producer Thom Flowers. We've hit an uptempo one folks! The song reminds me a little of Journey's Trial By Fire sound: almost a Can't Tame The Lion vibe, but modernized. I could imagine Neal Schon playing on this. John 5 is delivers a cool solo and can be heard throughout, albeit in an understated role.

07. You Belong To Me 04:07
Writers: Steve Perry, Barry Eastmond

'You Belong To Me' is another slow, soft piano ballad with some more string orchestration in place and of course, an ultra-smooth and soulful vocal. There's some rasp in that voice and yes, it's aged, but still full of those classic Perry nuances.

08. Easy To Love 04:03
Writers: Steve Perry, Thom Flowers

'Easy To Love' is yes, another ballad...a little different this time. Percussion and some organ accompany another slow, steady vocal. The chorus jumps in tempo with some classic Perry soul harmonies. This is definitely another ballad with a familiar vibe.

09. I Need You 02:59
Writer: George Harrison

'I Need You' is a cover of the Beatles tune, a mere 2.59 in length, this ballad features the most familiar Perry vocal sound yet! Soft, slow, soulful...it’s the theme of the record.

10. We Fly 03:56
Writers: Steve Perry, Jeff Babko

Closing out the standard edition of this album 'We Fly' is...wait for it...wait for it...a ballad! The first minute features only Steve's vocal. Talk about putting yourself out there! An intense song that builds as it goes with atmospheric keyboards in the background. Should be another favorite in time.

Well folks, that's that! Obviously, one should not ever pass judgment on a record after just one listen, so stay tuned for my full, detailed review soon. Much more listening to do here.
Upfront I'll say that it sounds great but is a very slow paced record. Not unexpected I guess with the subject matter in mind and the time passed since we last heard from “the voice”.

All but 2 tracks are ballads and overall the tempo and the soulfulness of the songs clearly makes this a mood listening album. Perfect for when the situation calls for it, but not for all situations.

L'ancien chanteur de JOURNEY, Steve Perry, a enregistré une nouvelle version de la chanson du groupe "It Could Have Been You" avec THE EFFECT, le groupe comprenant Trevor "Trev" Lukather (fils de Steve Lukather de TOTO) aux guitares, Nic Collins (fils de Phil Collins ) à la batterie et Steve Maggiora (TOTO) aux claviers, vidéo ci-dessous.

Perry a annoncé sa collaboration avec THE EFFECT dans une publication sur les réseaux sociaux mardi 30 avril. Il a écrit : "En 1986, le disque de JOURNEY 'Raised On Radio' est sorti et il contenait une chanson que j'ai toujours considérée comme un diamant brut.

"Je connais Trevor Lukather depuis l'âge de 9 ans et c'est un musicien très doué. Un jour, nous parlions de son nouveau groupe, THE EFFECT… Il a mentionné de manière surprenante que 'It Could Have Been You' était l'un de ses morceaux préférés. Je lui ai dit que je ressentais la même chose. J'ai ensuite dit : pourquoi ne l'enregistres-tu pas ? Il m'a demandé si je chanterais dessus s'ils le faisaient, j'ai répondu... "Bien sûr !"

"Je dois dire que chanter sur leur morceau puissant a fait ressortir en moi une expérience vocale d'il y a des années ! Alors maintenant... Sortie le 7 mai sur tous les réseaux sociaux et en streaming, c'est une version réinventée très puissante de 'It Could Have Been You' par... THE EFFECT Écoutez la !"

À l'automne 2018, Perry a fait son retour tant attendu avec la sortie de Traces, le premier nouvel album du musicien légendaire en 25 ans. L'expression personnelle d'amour, d'inspiration et de renouveau du LP a trouvé un écho auprès des critiques et des fans du monde entier, ravis de voir leur « voix d'une génération » créer à nouveau de la nouvelle musique.

Deux ans plus tard, Steve sort "Traces (Alternative Versions & Sketches)" via Fantasy Records. Sur cet album, Perry a revisité plusieurs de ses morceaux préférés, supprimant les grandes touches de production et ramenant les chansons à leur essence. Présentés acoustiques et bruts (dont certains sous forme de sketchs), des morceaux comme "Sun Shines Grey", "No Erasin'", "No More Cryin'" et "Most Of All" ont pris un sens nouveau et plus riche.

Le premier album solo de Perry depuis plus de deux décennies, « Traces », est sorti en octobre 2018 via Fantasy Records (une division de Concord Records/UMG). Il a crédité sa défunte petite amie, la psychologue Kellie Nash, décédée il y a plus de 11 ans, de l'avoir aidé à vouloir chanter à nouveau ; elle lui avait fait promettre qu'il ne retournerait pas en isolement après son décès.

En 2019, Perry a déclaré au « Jim Brickman Show » que la réponse à « Traces » avait été « vraiment géniale. Cela a été une expérience intéressante de sortir un disque à cette époque dans laquelle nous vivons. Ce qui signifie que c'est un paysage tellement différent… Maintenant nous diffusons, maintenant nous avons tout… tout ça. Et donc ça a été une expérience tellement intéressante de diffuser de la musique dans le nouveau paysage de ce que tout cela signifie, nous en vendons toujours sur iTunes. …. Personne ne vend plus de disques ; tout le monde diffuse. Mais je n'ai pas fait ça pour vendre des disques, alors c'est beau. Mais si vous voulez l'écouter, c'est aussi beau, parce que. tout ce que je voulais faire – et je l'ai dit à beaucoup de mes amis… La raison pour laquelle je fais à nouveau de la musique était, premièrement, pour tenir la promesse que je ne retournerais pas dans l'isolement. Et deuxièmement, je voulais juste voir si j'étais viable en tant qu'auteur-compositeur, chanteur, arrangeur, mixeur, producteur, je voulais voir si je pouvais même à distance participer de manière créative à tout cela. Et au début, c’était un défi, à cause des nouvelles technologies. Mais maintenant, j'ai accepté les conneries de tout cela. J'ai un super studio."

Perry est sorti avec Nash pendant près de deux ans avant de mourir en décembre 2012 après avoir reçu un diagnostic de cancer du sein. Il a pleuré pendant deux ans, puis a recommencé à enregistrer.

Dès sa sortie, "Traces" a été largement acclamé et a suscité un immense enthousiasme de la part des fans et des critiques du monde entier. L'album est entré dans le classement Billboard 200 Albums en n ° 6, le plus haut début de Perry en tant qu'artiste solo et a valu au Rock And Roll Hall Of Famer ses meilleures entrées dans les charts au Royaume-Uni, en Allemagne, au Canada et au Japon.

Perry a retrouvé JOURNEY pour la première fois depuis des années lorsqu'ils ont été intronisés au Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame en avril 2017. Le chanteur emblématique est apparu sur scène avec ses anciens camarades du groupe alors qu'ils prononçaient chacun un discours, mais ne s'est pas produit avec le groupe plus tard dans l'événement.
