Quarante ans après le tube L'Avventura, Éric Charden a succombé à un cancer. La nouvelle a été annoncée par son entourage dimanche matin. Le chanteur avait 69 ans. Il formait avec Stone un des duos les plus populaires de la variété française. Né le 15 octobre 1942 à Haïphong (Vietnam) - de son nom Jacques Puissant -, il était fils d'un Français ingénieur en chef des ports, et d'une Tibétaine. Un de ses titres, Indochine 42, comporte d'ailleurs un hommage à sa mère. À 7 ans, le petit Puissant quitte l'Asie avec sa mère pour Marseille, son père demeurant sur place. Bac en poche, il gagne Paris où cet auteur admirateur de Brel entend faire carrière. Son premier album J'ai la tête pleine de Provence, qui mise déjà sur la célébration du terroir hexagonal, sort en 1963. Mais c'est deux ans plus tard que le succès arrive avec un autre 33-tours Amour limite zéro. Ses compositions se teintent alors de psychédélisme pop british. Manset et Polnareff ne sont pas loin.

En janvier 1966, juré pour l'élection de Miss Beatnik, il rencontre la lauréate Annie Gautrat. Cette pétillante blonde de 18 ans est coiffée à la manière de Brian Jones, le premier leader des Rolling Stones. Voilà un nom de scène tout trouvé. Charden écrit à Stone deux chansons et adapte deux titres des Beatles pour son premier 45-tours. Le couple se marie mais pour l'instant chacun mène une carrière séparée. Charden écrit aussi pour Johnny Hallyday, Sylvie Vartan, Dalida, Claude François… Un autre nom post yé-yé, Monty, futur auteur de l'hymne footballistique Allez les Verts, lui doit Le monde est gris, le monde est bleu. Sorti en 1967, ce titre sera rapidement interprété un peu partout en Europe.
Pantalons patte d'éléphant et col pelle-à-tarte

C'est à partir de 1971 que Stone et Charden naissent vraiment sur scène. Leur formule de duo amoureux triomphera jusqu'en 1975. De multiples concerts en province, des unes heureuses de magazines de cœur et des apparitions quasi hebdomadaires dans une télévision où les émissions de variétés connaissent leur âge d'or leur permettent d'empiler les hits, dont L'Avventura. Pantalons patte d'éléphant et col pelle-à-tarte, ces gentils hippies, soixante-huitards de pure apparence, conviennent à un grand public friand de bluettes et verdure. En témoignent Il y a du soleil sur la France (1972) ou Made in Normandie (1973). La naissance d'un fils, Baptiste, alimente encore la fable du jeune ménage heureux des années Pompidou/Giscard. Toutefois, ni Charden ni Stone ne s'en satisfont. Par ailleurs, en privé, l'idylle bat de l'aile. Éric Charden sort en solo l'album 14 ans les gauloises, écrit avec Guy Bontempelli.

Et l'année suivante, toujours avec Bontempelli, il se lance dans la comédie musicale. La réalisation ambitieuse de Mayflower, qui conte l'arrivée des premiers immigrants britanniques en Amérique du Nord, sera donnée pendant deux ans au Théâtre de la Porte Saint-Martin. Stone, mais aussi sa nouvelle compagne Pascale Rivault, Patrick Topaloff, Roland Magdane y figurent. Suivent, avec beaucoup plus de difficultés et moins de réussite, L'Opéra vert, et La Cinquième Dimension. Concédant à la mode disco, Éric Charden trouve encore le chemin gagnant avec L'Été s'ra chaud cosigné avec Didier Barbelivien. Puis, en but à de gros problèmes financiers, il vit en se diversifiant, composant notamment pour les dessins animés Albator et pour la série japonaise de science-fiction San Ku Kaï. L'écriture de contes et la peinture alternent avec le travail de composition. Éric Charden ne reviendra sous les projecteurs qu'à partir des années 2000, à l'occasion de spectacles nostalgiques, comme, en 2007, la tournée Âge tendre et Têtes de bois. Il y chante seul mais aussi, à nouveau, avec Stone. Comme elle, en janvier dernier, il est fait chevalier de l'Ordre de la légion d'honneur. Il y a un mois, le duo a sorti Made in France, un CD de reprises célèbres. De duos toujours.

Le nageur norvégien Alexander Dale Oen, champion du monde 2011 et vice-champion olympique 2008 du 100m brasse, est mort lundi soir d'une attaque cardiaque alors qu'il prenait sa douche, à Flagstaff (Arizona) a indiqué la fédération norvégienne. Il était âgé de 26 ans.

Terrible nouvelle pour la natation mondiale. Alexander Dale Oen est décèdé lundi soir à Flagstaff, ville d'altitude en Arizona où il s'entraînait en vue des JO de Londres. Le Norvégien, champion du monde du 100m brasse à Shanghai en 2011 et vice-champion olympique sur la distance à Pékin en 2008, a succombé à un arrêt cardiaque, alors qu'il prenait sa douche, selon la Fédération norvégienne.

Le nageur de 26 ans a été retrouvé inconscient, dans sa salle de bain, par le reste de l'équipe, qui s'étonnait de ne pas avoir de ses nouvelles et qui a longuement frappé à sa porte. Les secours l'ont ensuite pris ensuite en charge. Pendant une heure, ils ont tenté de le ranimer. En vain. "Nous sommes tous sous le choc. Nos pensées vont principalement à la famille d'Alexander, parti beaucoup trop tôt. Les mots ne peuvent pas décrire notre douleur. La situation est irréelle pour tout le groupe, et les prochains jour vont être difficiles", a commenté l'entraîneur Peter Lovberg, dans un communiqué.

Lundi, c'est via twitter que Dale Oen, grand espoir de médaille pour Londres, avait donné une dernière fois de ses nouvelles et semblait avoir hâte de retourner, chez lui, à Bergen : "Plus que deux jours ici à Flagstaff, puis on pourra rentrer dans la plus belle ville de Norvège"...

C'est le magazine Rolling Stone qui l'annonce, Adam Yauch, l'un des fondateurs du groupe Beastie Boys est mort d'un cancer à l'âge de 48 ans.

Adam Yauch, l’un des membres fondateurs du trio Beastie Boys, est mort à l’âge de 48 ans. Plus connu sous le nom de MCA, il suivait un traitement contre le cancer depuis 2009.

Yauch a co-fondé les Beastie Boys en 1979 avec Mike Diamond, "Mike D" et Adam Horowitz, "Ad-Rock". Le groupe a commencé sa carrière en tant que groupe de punk hardcore, mais s’est rapidement essayé au hip-hop. Ensemble, ils ont sorti 8 albums studio, dont le récent Hot Sauce Commitee Part Two.

Donald "Duck" Dunn, bassiste de Booker T. and the MGs, est décédé aujourd'hui à 12h30 :

Donald “Duck” Dunn, who played on hundreds of rock and soul classics as the bassist for Booker T. and the MGs, and later as a session player, passed away Sunday morning at the age of 70. Steve Cropper, the MGs guitarist, broke the news on his Facebook page at approximately 12:30AM Eastern time.

“Today I lost my best friend, the world has lost the best guy and bass player to ever live,” Cropper, his lifelong friend, wrote. “Duck Dunn died in his sleep Sunday morning May 13 in Tokyo Japan after finishing 2 shows at the Blue Note Night Club.”

Born in Memphis in November 24, 1941, Dunn started playing bass at the age of 16. “I tried the guitar but it had two strings too many,” he wrote on his website. “It was just too complicated, man! Plus, I grew up with Steve Cropper. There were so many good guitar players another one wasn’t needed. What was needed was a bass.”

Cropper and Dunn soon formed a band, The Royal Spades, which grew into the Mar-Keys. The mother of the band’s saxophone player, Charles “Packy” Axton, was Estelle Axton, who owned the fledgling Satellite Record label. Shortly after their song ‘Last Night’ became a national hit, the label changed its name to Stax.

In 1964, Cropper convinced Dunn to join Booker T. and the MGs after original bassist Lewie Steinberg departed. As the house band for Stax, they provided the music for some of the greatest southern soul music ever recorded. Virtually every song recorded by Otis Redding, Sam and Dave, Albert King, Eddie Floyd, William Bell, Rufus Thomas and many others for Stax bears their distinct groove, with Dunn holding down the low end.

After Booker T. and the MGs disbanded in 1971, Dunn became a highly sought-after session bassist for those looking for a bit of that Memphis magic. He appeared on records by Rod Stewart, Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, Bill Withers, Muddy Waters, Neil Young (on ‘Are You Passionate?,’ which recently turned 10 years old) and many others. A discography, which probably isn’t complete, is on his website. Movie lovers were able to put the face to the sound when he appeared as himself in the 1980 movie ‘The Blues Brothers.’

As a member of Booker T. and the MGs, Dunn was elected to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1992, and received a Lifetime Achievement Grammy award in 2007.

Dunn is the second Memphis soul great to pass away this year — Andrew Love, who played tenor saxophone with Dunn on those Stax classics, died on April 12. Our deepest condolences go out to his family and the countless musicians who knew and worked with him over the years.

Le batteur originel d'Atlanta Rhythm Section vient de nous quitter :

During a career that spanned five decades, Robert Nix held down the beat for many famous rock ‘n’ rollers while writing and recording songs with the band he helped start in 1970. The co-founder and longtime drummer for the Atlanta Rhythm Section died at 67-years-old on Sunday morning (May 20), according to a statement on the band’s Facebook page.

“Our thoughts today are with Robert Nix, our founding drummer, who passed away this morning,” a statement attributed to co-founder and vocalist Rodney Justo reads. He died at the Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis, Tenn. leaving behind his wife and three kids.

Nix, like Justo, got his start as part of Roy Orbison’s band the Candymen. During the ’60s and ’70s however, he freelanced to befriend and jam with southern rockers like the Allman Brothers Band and Ronnie Van Zant, while spending time with the era’s A-listers like the Beatles, Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin. He recounted his story in an undated interview with Sweet Home Music.

Along with lending his talents to Lynyrd Skynyrd‘s ‘Tuesday’s Gone,’ Nix wrote and recorded songs on nine ARS records. ‘Spooky,’ ‘So Into You’ and ‘Champagne Jam’ (the title-track from the band’s platinum selling album from 1978) were co-written by Nix. He was with the Atlanta Rhythm Section from 1971 to 1979.

According to the Wells Funeral Home, services for Nix will be held at 3PM May 24 at the Batesville Presbyterian Church in Batesville, Miss. Visitation will be held from 1PM until service time at the church, where he was a member.

L'ancien batteur de Skid Row, Mark "Bam Bam" McConnell est décédé mercredi, suite à des problèmes liés au foie. Il fut également batteur de Blackfoot en 2006 et 2007 :

Former Sebastian Bach drummer Mark ‘Bam Bam’ McConnell has died, reportedly due to kidney and liver failure. McConnell drummed with former Skid Row singer Bach between 1997 and 2005, and also performed as a member of the band Blackfoot in 2006 and 2007.

It was just yesterday that Bach revealed his friend and former bandmate was “fighting for his life,” with another friend stating that the drummer’s liver and kidneys had shut down, causing partial brain damage due to the swelling.

It was hoped that his health was improving, but Metal Insider quotes a Facebook post from a member of McConnell’s family confirming the sad news:

“Mark passed at 9:42 this morning surrounded by family and close friends. We will miss him…he was precious to all of us and touched all our hearts deeply and profoundly. On behalf of our family thank you to all of you for your prayers and support. We will post more info when we’ve had a chance to catch our breaths.”

The outpouring of love and memories from friends and fans following the sad news is of course heartbreaking, but also quite touching, as you can see for yourself on his Facebook wall.

Pete Cosey, who played guitar on some of the most controversial albums ever made by Rock and Roll Hall of Famers Muddy Waters and Howlin’ Wolf, has died at age 68 of unknown causes.

According to the Chicago Reader, the news of Cosey’s passing was posted on Living Colour guitarist Vernon Reid’s private Facebook page. Cosey was a session musician at blues label Chess Records during the late ’60s, before helping Miles Davis explore jazz-rock fusion in the early ’70s with his pioneering work on landmark albums such as ‘Agharta’ and ‘Get Up With It.’

While at Chess, Cosey contributed to Waters’ controversial late ’60s psychedelic blues albums ‘Electric Mud’ and ‘After the Rain,’ as well as Wolf’s similarly targeted ‘The Howlin’ Wolf Album.’ In an attempt to cross over to a modern rock audience, the albums featured heavy Jimi Hendrix-style production. As AllMusic humorously describes it, some critics considered the effect “as ill-advised as putting Dustin Hoffman into a Star Wars epic.”

Regardless, Cosey’s innovative and creative playing was singled out from any blame. The albums also won more than their fair share of love from fans and peers, including Hendrix and Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones, who reportedly stated that ‘Electric Mud’ influenced the creation of his band’s song ‘Black Dog.’ That album has also been cited as an early influence on the rhythms of hip-hop music.

In later years, Cosey participated in a wide variety of projects, including work with Reid and Public Enemy frontman Chuck D. He appeared briefly in Martin Scorsese’s 2004 documentary ‘The Blues,’ appropriately enough reuniting with the ‘Electric Mud’ band to record a new song.

Doc Watson, artiste qui combinait folk, bluegrass, blues et jazz est décédé le 29 mai à Winston-Salem en Caroline du Nord à l'âge de 89 ans. l avait été hospitalisé la semaine dernière suite à une chute à son domicile. Une intervention au niveau du colon avait été effectuée.

Doc Watson, who combined folk, bluegrass, blues and jazz guitar into a style all his own, passed away today (May 29) at the age of 89 in Winston-Salem, N.C. Last week, he had been hospitalized following a fall at his house that required colon surgery.

Watson was influential to generations of musicians who have looked to America’s folk tradition for inspiration. “To lose Earl Scruggs, Levon Helm and Doc Watson in one year is just too, too much,” Rosanne Cash tweeted upon hearing the news.

Born in Deep Gap, N.C. in 1923, Arthel Lane Watson lost his sight before his first birthday due to an eye infection that was never treated. To help him cope with being blind and impoverished, at the age of 11, his father gave him a homemade banjo made out of the skin of a dead cat.

Watson soon switched to the guitar and began playing on street corners and local contests. He is widely considered to be one of the greatest guitar players ever, popularizing the style of play known as “crosspicking,” which brought the flashy runs traditionally associated with the banjo to the acoustic guitar. But he was also adept at fingerpicking, as the videos below demonstrate.

The folk boom of the early-1960s made a star out of Watson, who got his nickname early in his career when a radio announcer told a crowd that he needed a nickname. Someone suggested “Doc” and the name stuck. In 1964, began performing and recording with his son, Merle, who tragically died in a tractor accident on the family farm in 1985. Perhaps his greatest commercial success came when he appeared on the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band’s 1972 album, ‘Will the Circle Be Unbroken,’ which paired the folk-country-rock band with many of their influences.

Watson won eight Grammy Awards throughout his career, including a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2004. He recieved the National Medal of Arts from President Bill Clinton in 1997.
