Le festival a commencé hier avec deux heures de retard suite aux trombes d'eau qui sont tombées sur le site. Europe a été l'un des groupes à devoir annuler sa prestation :

The tenth Download Festival was forced to start two hours late yesterday amid worsening weather conditions that caused traffic chaos and forced organisers to cut bands from the bill.

Headliners The Prodigy closed out the iconic event’s first day following performances by Machine Head, Slash, Nightwish, Little Angels, Terrorvision and many others.

But Europe, Cancer Bats, Rise to Remain and Six Hour Sundown were amongst those to miss their sets – although Cancer Bats managed to make two appearances later in the day.

Rain and road closures led to some fans experiencing five-hour delays on the 20-mile stretch of road between Nottingham and Donington Park in the UK’s midlands.

But the real health and safety risk in the 100,000-capacity arena was high winds, with gusts up to 70mph predicted during the afternoon – similar to those which caused fatal stage collapses across the world during last year’s festival season.

Bosses decided just before noon, when the three-day show was to open, that they’d need to take emergency action to guarantee the public’s safety in the arena. They laid down thousands of bales of straw to absorb deep mud and adjusted or removed banners and flags most at risk of causing injury.

By the time they felt it safe to open at 2pm, a number of bands’ time slots had come and gone.

Six Hour Sundown drummer Olly Smith described his band’s cancellation as a “Spinal Tap moment”. He said: “We were all ready to go. Sound check was awesome. Thirty minutes before we went on we got told the while festival was being opened late. We were like, ‘But we’re on in 30 minutes – are we going to play to no one?’ Our tour manager told us we weren’t playing at all.

“But we’re playing an acoustic set tomorrow and we got half-told we might get brought back next year.”

It was the second blow in a week to the band fronted by Iron Maiden mainman Steve Harris’ daughter Lauren: they’d been forced to cancel a UK tour show earlier in the week due to a problem with her back.

Rise to Remain had been so excited about opening Download’s main stage – dedicated to amplification pioneer Jim Marshall – they’d created a Spotify playlist featuring the best of the weekend’s bands in their view. It had been featured on the online music service’s staff blog.

Cancer Bats managed to swap their canned main stage set with an extra slot on the fourth stage after headliners Gallows. They also made a guest appearance during Billy Talent’s main stage show, playing their track Hail Destroyer. Singer Liam Cormier said: “NOFX gave us a huge shout out too, so I’m kind of stoked – it all worked out pretty good.”

Europe frontman Joey Tempest revealed transport delays had put paid to their second stage appearance, saying: “I live in London so I was already here. But the flight was two-hour delayed from Sweden so the guys were very late. Then we hit traffic on the way here. It was very close but in the end we had to postpone.

“We didn’t want to go on and play one or two songs – we wanted to play a good set. We’re cool with the organisers and we hope we can get a good slot next year. It feels strange not having played today. It’s still a great place to be. I was here as a kid, I saw Aerosmith. It’s legendary.”

Event officials said: “We apologise to everyone at Download and to all local residents.” An insider told Classic Rock: “Rain wasn’t the issue – health and safety required banners and displays to be removed because, at 70mph, they’d just become sails.”

Prodigy keyboard tech Matt Davie reported: “I’ve come down early to make sure nothing’s been blown over. The wind is pretty fierce on stage. It’s making a lot of creaking noises. The mud is a bit of a challenge, getting things across site. But it’s all good.”

A picture of tents pitched in two feet of water was circulated online for most of the day as an example of conditions at Download – but it was actually a photo of the Glastonbury Festival several years ago.

Status Quo have been added to the bill for next year’s Download festival, which takes place at Donington on the weekend of June 13-15.

Francis Rossi, Rick Parfitt and co are among 12 acts named to appear under headliners Aerosmith, Avenged Sevenfold and Linkin Park (who’ll perform classic album Hybrid Theory in full).

The other additions are the Offspring, Steel Panther, Trivium, In Flames, While She Sleeps, Letlive, The Black Dahlia Murder, Crossfaith, Miss May I, Blessthefall and Dying Fetus.

Quo – who recently confirmed their Frantic Four lineup would reunite for “one last go” – last played Donington when they headlined Monsters Of Rock in 1982.

Rossi says: “That year saw the Falklands War, the launch of the Commodore 64, Aston Villa winning the European Cup and the raising of the Mary Rose. You might say a lot has changed since then – but we’re still rocking and still playing the Quo hits.”

Alter Bridge, Rob Zombie and Fall Out Boy have been previously announced as Download’s special guests. Tickets remain on sale at 2013 prices for a limited time via the festival website, costing £160 for a weekend arena ticket, £185 for weekend ticket and three nights camping and £195 for weekend ticket and five nights camping.

Kiss are the final headline act to be confirmed for next year's Download festival.


The Rock And Roll Hall of Famers will close the main stage at Donington on Sunday, June 14, following headline sets from Slipknot on June 12 and Muse on June 13.

Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley and co will play immediately after Motley Crue, who'll end their touring career later in 2015, making their Download set their last ever UK festival appearance. Also confirmed in the third batch of acts are Slash and Enter Shikari.

Paul Stanley, who fronted Kiss at Monsters Of Rock in 1988 and 1996 before headlining Download in 2008, says: "Download has become a tradition of stature that separates the pretenders from the contenders and the champs from the chimps. It will be an honour to take our turf and leave no doubt why we wear the crown."

Simmons adds: "To all our fans – our intention is to get on that stage, blow the heavens to smithereens and take no prisoners."

Crue bassist Nikki Sixx reports: "It's always an over the top day and night at Download, and we’re really excited to be coming over to the UK and playing the show."

Slash says: "Download is a very special event for me. It's been a major destination since I started and I'm always excited to be a part of it."

Singer Rou Reynolds of Enter Shikari says: "The thing I love more than anything is playing outside at night. We thank Download for the opportunity to immerse ourselves in the great outdoors and engulf and deluge festival-goers with our noise. It is an honour to be closing the night – and because of this we will bring illuminations with us. Do attend."

Certes mais bon, on ne va pas se plaindre compte tenu du fait que nous, petits métalleux avons souvent été privés de festivals de ce type. Après, il faudra voir la prog....

Ben si, justement. Nous avons un fest qui fonctionne plus que très bien: le HELLFEST.

Je ne vois pas l'interêt d'en programmer un qui lui ressemble, dans le même mois, si ce n'est pour lui faire de l'ombre, voire lui piquer du public.

Pourquoi donc de fameux Download n'est-il pas apparu avant?
Pourquoi ne choisit-il pas une autre date?

Nous sommes dans une mode des festivals plein air ou beaucoup de styles sont représentés. Comme ça marche, chacun essaie d'en profiter en lançant le sien.

compte tenu du fait que nous, petits métalleux avons souvent été privés de festivals de ce type a écrit:

Nous avons eu un festival à choisy le roi qui n'a pas fonctionné dans les 80' 5HARD FRAN9AIS°;
3 ou 4 Monsters of Rock, mais pas assez rentables sans doute.
Le PMFF à paris qui n'a pas survécu.
Sans compter le Satan Fest de Renaud Hantson qui n'a pas non plus fonctionné super bien.

Il y a actuellement en France deux fest qui marchent: le Hell et le Motocultor (à un moindre niveau).

C'est déjà bien car le public a rarement suivi pour les grands Festival Métal. Le prix, la com, les lieux,...... Bref, nous n'en avons pas eu beaucoup mais à qui la faute???
Je ne saurais dire.

Il y a eu aussi le Breaking Sound Festival au Bourget en 1984.

Tiens! Tiens! KISS aura finalement fait les deux gros festoches de France sur deux ans. Maiden sera-t-il présent à Clisson le week-end du 19 juin?

Décidément, le festival Dowland a du mal à prendre en France. Tout joue contre eux.
