Professionally Recorded Concert Videos
"Led Zeppelin DVD" offers outstanding quality versions of items that previously circulated as bootlegs, such as the 1969.03.17 Danish TV footage. Lots of short video clips are available, as are a few complete concert performances. For extensive information about extant circulating video of Led Zeppelin, consult the List of known circulating Zeppelin concert videos in the Rover forum here at Royal-Orleans. Below are the most notable of the complete or nearly complete concert performances:
1970.01.09 London, Royal Albert Hall - Nearly all of the available video from this show is on the official Led Zeppelin DVD, though out of order and suffering some cuts, most unfortunately the omission of the final encore of Long Tall Sally. Short and full versions of Long Tall Sally are available on bootleg videos. Unfortunately, no video of Thank You, Heartbreaker, and Since I've Been Loving from this awesome show circulate, at all. On the Honorable Mentions list above.
1973.07.27, 28, 29, New York City, Madison Square Garden - The recent rerelease of The Song Remains the Same on DVD and BluRay include as bonus items additional songs cut from the original film: Celebration Day, Over the Hills and Far Away, Misty Mountain Hop and The Ocean. The latter two tracks were available on the official Led Zeppelin DVD, along with Since I've Been Loving You and a longer version of Black Dog. A "Fan Edition" of The Song Remains the Same places these songs into the original performance order, while eliminating the non-performance material between some of tracks, and replacing the truncated version of Heartbreaker with the entire version from the new CD soundtrack. The result is as complete of a video of a 1973 show we can expect for the foreseeable future. Bootleg audio from the last night is on the Honorable Mentions list above.
1975.05.24 London, Earl's Court - Nearly complete video of this show have circulated for a few years now, with video of Moby Dick comprising the newest addition to the show. The cut in Going To California in the commonly available versions of this show are filled with AUD sourced audio and video slide shows. The performance of In My Time of Dying from the official Led Zeppelin DVD is from this show. One highlight of this show is a great version of Whole Lotta Love/Sex Machine/Turn on Your Love Light/Black Dog as the encore. The outstanding call-and-play between Page's theremin and Plant is even better on video than on the audio bootlegs. See the Earl's Court list above and the Classic Bootlegs list below.
1975.05.25 London, Earl's Court Arena - Though long portions of this show have circulated for quite a while, nearly complete video of this show has fairly recently become widely available. The whole show is patched together from sources that range from good to some pretty horrible spots in the middle of the recording. The performances of Going to California, That's the Way, Bron-Yr-Aur Stomp and Trambled Underfoot from the official Led Zeppelin DVD are from this show. I find the version of Whole Lotta Love/Black Dog not to be as good as the one the night before. But, the band returns for two more encores afterwards. Before Heartbreaker Plant takes a big hit from a joint and blows smoke towards the camera. The final encore of Communication Breakdown includes a reggae jam with bits of D'yer Mak'er thrown in. On the Must-Haves list. See also the Earl's Court section above.
1977.07.17 Seattle - Not a very good performance, and the audio is rather flat. But, video of the entire show is readily available, but patched from two sources. A better quality source for the last part of the show has recently surfaced.
1979.08.04 Stevenage, Knebworth Festival - This is by far the better of the two Knebworth shows (note that all of the portions of the Knebworth performances from the official Led Zeppelin DVD are taken from this performance). Video clips from Knebworth had been circulating among collectors and had been bootlegged for several years. A complete video of this show has been available in a few versions for a few years now. This first Knebworth show included Ten Years Gone, and an encore of Heartbreaker. On the Must-Haves list. See also the Classic Bootlegs list below.
1979.08.11 Stevenage, Knebworth Festival - The lesser of the two Knebworth performances. Video of the entire show has been readily available for a bit longer than the show a week earlier. The show is marred by some glitches in the sound equipment. Page breaks a few strings in the solo for Over the Hills and Far Away. The final encore is Communication Breakdown.
