Jack Osbourne, the son of BLACK SABBATH singer Ozzy Osbourne, has been filming the godfathers of heavy metal during the creation of their long-awaited new studio album, 13, the first since 1978's Never Say Die! Osbourne - who is also working for Fuse News - has filed a video report from the band's invite-only 13 listening party which was held this past Wednesday, April 10th at The Montalban in Los Angeles, California. In the report below, Sabbath singer Ozzy Osbourne, bassist Geezer Butler and guitarist Tony Iommi discuss their first album in 35 years. When asked if there was any sort of trepidation about recording a new album, Ozzy replied, “The pressure was on us, because it had been so long since we’d worked together … it’s like now or never. This album, for me, was probably the most important of my career.”
Tony Iommi added about the writing process of 13: “I had a bunch of riffs on CDs and played it to everybody, and then everybody decided, ‘We like this one’ or ‘We don’t like that,’ and the ones we liked, we started work on them — built them up.”
Jack also asked Iommi if they had any apprehensions about working with legendary producer Rick Rubin (SLAYER, METALLICA): “It was funny at first, because coming to rehearsals, when we were actually writing the songs, he’d come down for like, five or ten minutes and then go. Then he’d go, ‘Call me when you’ve got another one.’ So it was really strange, we’d never worked with anybody like that before.”

Specific track remarks:
'End Of The Beginning' (8:07). Too long a track for an opener but otherwise very good. Very heavy. Ozzy’s vocals don’t evoke dragons and knights and the soaring evil of Dio…rather, they have a melodic but, unsettling quality to then. Not operatic bombast, but understated, melodic eeriness. But it works. This is not the uninspired songwriting of those two songs from the Reunion album — this is real songwriting with some good riffs from Iommi. A very good song.
'God Is Dead?' (8:54). This song slays. Very cool riffing and a good melody line. The B section is evocative of the Holy in the Sky riff but it still works really well. This is an excellent song, worthy of standing with anything in the Ozzy catalog (thought it lacks the instant memorability of Iron Man or Paranoid).
God Is Dead ?
'Loner' (5:06). Sounds a LOT like a heavy, modern-production version of NIB (I even sang 'Oh yeah' after the appropriate riff). Lyrically and mood-wise it mixes in some Johnny Blade. It’s a good song, but not as good as the previous ones.
'Zeitgeist' (4:28). Mellow, and somewhat evocative of 'Planet Caravan'. It’s fine, but I anticipate skipping this on CD.
'Age of Reason' (7:02). This song kills. My notes (again, scratched in there by keys) are unintelligible. But this one had people pretty fired up.
Age Of Reason : cette chanson tue..
'Live Forever' (4:49). Has a 'Children Of The Grave' / 'Hole In The Sky' feel once again. A good song, if not as ambitious as some of the others.
Live Forever : il y a un côté Children Of The Grave / et de nouveau Hole In The Sky.
'Damaged Soul' (7:43). Very heavy blues. Too bluesy for my tastes. Blues blues and more blues, and when you are done with the blues, it shoves another does of blues up your ass. This is overstated — it’s plenty heavy. It just is too (wait for it) bluesy for my tastes. Others enjoyed it more than me. Still, this is not a throwaway, just not one of my favorites.
'Dear Father' (7:06). A great song to finish with, again quite heavy with a lot of energy. The B section is the one featured in the video with Rubin telling Ozzy to try again (“…the victims of the sins you devise.”) The main section is beefier than that part. There is a recurrent tritone riff that is very evocative of the first notes played in the song Black Sabbath. It’s so evocative that one wonders if it’s purposeful…and the riffs appears again at the very end of the song…and then the song ends…with rain…and church bells. Very cool. Very cool indeed.

Here is quote from Mike.X from the Iommi forums in response to what Ozzy's statements and fans reaction :
"I think this has been misquoted out of proportion. There was no drinking at the studio or during the sessions but Geez and Tony certainly enjoy an odd drink as do a lot of us. Can't speak for Ozzy but I never saw him with a drink at any point. Everyone was extremely professional during the recording."
I personally feel Ozzy exaggerated a bit with his statement , yet I believe he might had some serious internal family issues with his wife and kids , from most of the interviews and pictures I've seen for him since 11/11/11 , he looked remarkably healthier , more sharp and focused than he ever did for last 15 years at least ! he might had some drinking issues here and there , but I don't think its anywhere as serious as it was before he got sober , then maybe I'm wrong as well , but anyway I think we should just leave all of this behind our backs at the moment , Friday we will have our first proper taste of the new album (new single) and the tour starts within a couple of days from now ! I think we can elaborate more on Ozzy's issues IF there are some serious concerns with either the album or tour , quite positive he will get himself together on tour and the album will just kill as expected !

Black Sabbath vocalist Ozzy Osbourne is sharing new details about the band’s failed reunion with drummer Bill Ward.
Following the group’s press conference in Hollywood on November 11, 2011, Ward would eventually go on to announce his decision to skip the planned album and tour over a contractual dispute.
In the meantime, the band has said very little about Ward’s absence, preferring to focus on the task at hand.
Now, in a new interview with Mojo magazine, Ozzy sheds some light on the group’s initial dealings with Ward.
"I guess it's to do with finances or something,” Ozzy tells Mojo. “But there was also another side to it. When Bill came along, we all had to ask, 'Can he do an hour-and-a-half, two-hour gig? Can he cope?' My suggestion was that we run through a set and see how he got on because he was so out of condition and the drummer is the most demanding job in the whole band. We looked at Bill, and he couldn't remember what the fuck we were doing. But he didn't come clean and say, 'I can't cut this gig, but can we work something out, guys, where I'll come on but with another drummer backing me up?' Or, 'I'll come and play a few songs.' That would have been cool."
"I get where he's coming from, though,” continued Ozzy. “His pride was hurt and I get it. I really do get it. The guy will always be a dear, dear friend and a brother to me, but ... He can't be surprised that he didn't get the gig. ... You know them yellow fucking stick-on memo notes? He had them all over his fucking drums. I was like, 'What the fuck's that for, Bill?' He said, 'I can't remember what I'm doing.' I go, 'How are you gonna remember out of those 500,000 bits of paper stuck all over your kit, which one you're looking at, Bill?' (He said) 'I'll know.' Ah, OK great. I'm not gonna give Bill a hatchet job, but at the same time we haven't got the patience to deal with it."
Sabbath recruited Brad Wilk of Rage Against The Machine to handle drums on the “13” album, due June 11.
Ozzy's touring drummer Tommy Clufetos, who sat behind the kit for Sabbath's three shows last year — a warm-up gig in Birmingham, England, a headlining spot at the U.K.'s Download festival in June, and a second headlining set at Chicago's Lollapalooza in August — is behind the kit for the current world tour, which kicked off recently in New Zealand.

"I think as far as the anger and the youthful feel that we had all those years ago, that we had on the early albums, i think a lot of it is going to be on this album. I don't know much happy stuff." - Tony on the new Black Sabbath Album. http://smarturl.it/BlackSabbath13DlxiT |

Once I heard my doctor say that, my whole world changed,” Iommi says. “I thought, Bloody cancerous lymphoma? Well that’s it. I’ve had it.” This news came as such a shock that even today, as Guitar World sits across from a healthy-looking Iommi in a cottage in rural West Midlands, England, the guitarist’s affable disposition darkens when he recalls that grim period.
“Once they diagnosed it, I had to start the treatment right away,” he says. “And it knocked me about. I’d go through stages thinking, Can I do this? And then: Of course I can do this. I don’t want to die. I want to carry on and do what I’m supposed to do.”
Iommi’s treatment included an aggressive course of chemotherapy and radiation that attacked the cancer but seriously taxed his immune system. He began to feel sicker, lose weight and weaken, and had to focus what little energy he had into fighting his illness. Plans for the Sabbath record were put on hold. But as the guitarist’s body began responding to treatment, Iommi’s creative spark was rekindled. Much to everyone’s surprise, he turned his attention back to writing the songs that would eventually make up Black Sabbath’s new disc, 13.
“They thought I would pack up,” Iommi says. “But I asked the doctor, ‘Is it okay if I work?’ And he said, ‘Yes, you’ve just got to be careful.’ So I’d go in the studio and play for a bit. Then I’d get tired and I’d have to go and sit down. The guys would tell me not to push it.”
Iommi was determined to get the album made. And as Osbourne and Butler tell us when we catch up with them in a Los Angeles recording studio, where they’re putting the final touches on the album, he rose to the occasion.
“We all rallied around him,” Osbourne says. “But it’s not like we’d be saying, ‘Are you okay? Are you okay?’ We just got on with it. Sure, he looked tired, but he was a soldier and marched on. He still had more riffs coming out of him than anyone. None of us would go, ‘Oh, he’s fucking ill again.’ We’re bros. We grew up together. It’s like a family member getting sick.”
“It brought up how we’re all just mortal beings, and we aren’t gonna be here forever,” Butler adds. “Tony and I were on the Heaven & Hell tour with Ronnie James Dio, and six months later Ronnie was dead [from stomach cancer, in 2010]. We didn’t have any inkling that was gonna happen. When Tony got the cancer, obviously that was in his mind. We didn’t know how he’d respond to the treatment. So it was like, Let’s get the album done at all costs, as long as Tony’s up to it. So we’d write for three weeks, and then he’d go for his treatment and we’d all have three weeks off. But it didn’t affect his playing at all. In fact I think it really encouraged him and kept his mind off the cancer, which is the best thing you can possibly do if you have that.”
As Iommi got stronger, his future, as well as Black Sabbath’s, started looking brighter. The band continued writing and rehearsing, and making progress on the new album. On November 11, 2011, Sabbath held a press conference at Los Angeles’ Whisky a Go-Go to officially announce that they had reformed and would record an album of new material. But in early 2012, Bill Ward surprised everyone when he announced that he would not move forward with recording, saying he felt “ostracized” by the band and calling the contract he was offered “unsignable.”
“I was shocked,” Iommi says. “We were hearing stuff from lawyers, like, ‘I’m not happy with this. I’m not happy with that.’ We waited a long time for Bill and we wanted to sort it out. But at the end of the day, especially after I was diagnosed, I thought, Fucking hell, that’s it. We’ve got to get a move on. I might pop off next year! So I emailed him and said, ‘Bill, we can’t wait any longer. We’ve got to get on with it.’ And that was it.” |
