In a mutual decision, Black Star Riders and drummer Jimmy DeGrasso have decided to part ways. The band wish him well in his future endeavours and thank him for the great albums, killer shows and good times together. The new drummer will be announced shortly.

Black Star Riders start their summer European Tour in Dusseldorf on May 24th.

Black Star Riders are proud to announce their new drummer, Chad Szeliga.

Chad, formerly with Breaking Benjamin and Black Label Society (among others), first came to Ricky, Scott & Damon’s attention in 2012 when Thin Lizzy were touring North America with Judas Priest and Black Label Society were also on the bill.

After auditions last month in Los Angeles with some incredible drummers, Chad was chosen to take up the drum stool position for Black Star Riders.

Ricky Warwick ‘I'm delighted to welcome Chad Szeliga to the Black Star Riders family...Chad is an amazing drummer, a great guy and will powerfully strengthen BSR's resolve going forward.’

Damon Johnson chimes in, “Chad is a monster musician and a quality human being. I couldn't be more excited to welcome him to our band and to show off his skills to Black Star Riders fans worldwide."

Ca commence mal pour l'interviewer Steve Jones, l'ex-guitariste des Sex Pistols qui ne connaît ni d'Eve ni d'Adam Ricky Warwick et qui ne sait même pas qu'il vient de The Almighty et par ailleurs que BSR est en tournée avec le Priest et Saxon. Il est aussi complètement perdu concernant la discographie du groupe. Le mec a véritablement bien "bossé avant l'interview.       La seule chose dont il se souvienne, c'est l'épisode des Greedy Bastards en 78 auquel il avait participé :

Black Star Riders are proud to announce that their new lead guitar player from January 1st 2019 will be Christian Martucci, from Stone Sour

Christian will replace founding BSR member Damon Johnson, who has decided to part company with the band at the end of the year to concentrate on a solo career and session work.

Damon Johnson "3 excellent albums in 6 years with this great band is one of the proudest achievements of my career, and it has been glorious. My family and I have decided to focus our efforts into growing my solo career and I'm excited to be home more to take advantage of working and writing in Nashville. Though I'm moving on from BSR, I will continue to work with Ricky in "Warwick Johnson", and plan on being a part of any Thin Lizzy commitments in the future. Much love and continued success to the entire band and to the incredible Black Star Riders fans worldwide."

Scott Gorham “I just want to thank Damon for being part of the band and three great records together and I wish him all the best. For BSR it’s onwards and upwards!”

Ricky Warwick explains, “Damon Johnson is my bro and I love him. It’s been a wonderful journey for the last 6 years writing, recording and playing live with him, molding, building and making Black Star Riders into the formidable force that we have become. I totally respect his decision, he will always be family. I will miss him.”

Robert Crane added “I’m so thankful to have shared this amazing musical journey with our brother Damon. I’m hopeful our paths cross again one day. Love and respect to D.J. and his family.”

Christian explains, “As a fan who’s been inspired by their music, it’s an honor and privilege to be a part of Black Star Riders. I’m really looking forward to this!”

Black Star Riders will head down for the first time to South America in November, joining Judas Priest (with Alice in Chains on some dates) for shows in Chile, Argentina & Brazil. Damon will not be with the band for this run, but his temporary replacement is long time friend of the band, Thunder guitarist Luke Morley.

They will finish off the year with some dates in the United Kingdom, which will be Damon’s last shows with the band.


The band will then enter the studio in early 2019 to record their fourth studio album for Nuclear Blast Entertainment.

BLACK STAR RIDERS sortira son quatrième album, intitulé Another State Of Grace, en septembre via Nuclear Blast.

Il a été produit par Jay Ruston (STONE SOUR, ANTHRAX, URIAH HEEP).

Il y a 4 jours, le groupe a filmé à Manhattan Beach en Californie, une vidéo afin de promouvoir le premier single de son quatrième album intitulé Another State Of Grace qui sortira en septembre :

BLACK STAR RIDERS filmed a video earlier today (Friday, April 26) for the first single off their fourth studio album, "Another State Of Grace", in Manhattan Beach, California. Due in September via Nuclear Blast, the follow-up to 2017's "Heavy Fire" was produced and mixed by Jay Ruston (STONE SOUR, ANTHRAX, URIAH HEEP).

The band will support the record with a full U.K. and Ireland tour in October 2019, with additional dates in other territories to be announced in the near future.

BLACK STAR RIDERS, which consists of Ricky Warwick (lead vocals, guitar), Scott Gorham (lead guitar) and Robert Crane (bass) along with recent additions Chad Szeliga (drums) and Christian Martucci (lead guitar), recorded the album in February at Sphere Studios in Burbank, California.

Says Warwick: "I'm absolutely thrilled to be back with a brand new BLACK STAR RIDERS album. In my honest opinion, this is the best record the band has made. This is Christian and Chad's first album with the band and they have brought a fantastic energy and vibe."

Gorham adds: "It was great to be back in Los Angeles, and recording with Jay Ruston was an absolute pleasure. I am excited to see everyone's reactions to this amazing record… and I can't wait to get back on the road and play you these new songs."

Guitarist Damon Johnson announced his exit from BLACK STAR RIDERS in September, but continued performing with the band until the end of the group's U.K. tour on December 3.

"Heavy Fire" was a worldwide success, reaching position No. 6 on the U.K. chart, No. 11 on the German chart, and No. 91 on U.S. Current Top Albums chart.

BLACK STAR RIDERS : Another State Of Grace

Cet album de Black Star Riders, je l'attendais comme on attendrait un succulent sandwich aux rillettes. Le pain est frais et les rillettes sont généreuses. Les cornichons, faut-il en mettre ? Là, ça dépend de mon humeur. La plupart du temps, je n'en mets pas car cela dénature le goût des rillettes.

Je l'attendais donc avec impatience ce nouvel effort du groupe intitulé Another State Of Grace. Un autre état de grâce ? Manifestement, jusque-là, le groupe s'est senti dans d'excellentes dispositions pour composer ses albums. Et c'est encore le cas pour celui-ci qui comprend 11 compositions de très bonne tenue dans son ensemble et ce, malgré quelques réserves de ma part. Attendez-vous à ce que je pinaille sur certains points.

Depuis la sortie de Heavy Fire, beaucoup de choses se sont passées entre la tournée faisant la promotion de cet album (qui a soigneusement évité la France soit dit en passant) et les célébrations diverses et variées pour Thin Lizzy. En effet, nous avons assisté à deux départs majeurs : tout d'abord, le batteur Jimmy De Grasso avec qui les relations étaient devenues quelque peu tendues et Damon Johnson, l'alter ego à la guitare de Scott Gorham sont partis tailler la route. Là, pour ce qui concerne notre ami Damon, point d'animosité mais surtout une envie de se consacrer davantage à sa carrière solo. Ainsi, nos deux amis ont donc respectivement été remplacés par Chad Szeliga de Black Label Society derrière les fûts et Christian Martucci de Stone Sour à la six-cordes.

L'opener de cet album, intitulé Tonight The Moonlight Let Me Down, se veut être pétillant, accrocheur et joyeux à tonalité lizzienne, vous vous en doutez. Certains feront sans doute le parallèle avec la légendaire chanson de Lizzy, Dancing In The Moonlight à cause de la présence du mot "Moonlight" dans le titre et le solo de saxophone de Michael Monroe (ex-Hanoi Rocks). Que nenni, point de rythme chaloupé ici.

Le morceau-titre lui, regorge d'ambiances guerrières et ce, à travers les choeurs qui sont du même acabit. On lorgne effectivement du côté d'Emerald que tout addict lizzien sera à même de reconnaître. La basse vrombit appuyée par les roulements de batterie faisant irrémédiablement penser à une charge militaire. Un morceau-titre ravageur et efficace pour faire court.

Ain't The End Of The World, très proche de Bound For Glory issu de All Hell Breaks Loose nous convie sur le terrain des twin guitars si chères à qui vous savez, le tout greffé sur une rythmique de plomb, très saccadée en fait renforcée par un subtil solo de Gorham.

Underneath The Afterglow, gorgé de claviers, repose lui, sur de subtils phrasés ponctués de "oh oh" pas forcément du meilleur goût. Cela reste néanmoins un titre dont on retient le refrain et c'est bien là, l'essentiel. Ceci dit, il n'y a plus rien de lizzien là-dedans. Pas un mal en soi puisque le groupe a opté pour une évolution manifeste.

Non plus dans Soldier In The Ghetto d'ailleurs qui débute sur une partie d'orgue Hammond très syncopée voire funky. J'ai cru entendre à ce moment précis, le regretté Jon Lord (époque Mark III) qui de là où il se trouvait, avait pris pour quelques minutes les rênes du morceau pour s'en octroyer les bénéfices. Bluffant en ce qui me concerne mais très frais et agréable à l'écoute.

Why Do You Love Your Guns ?, une ballade à l'atmosphère tragique, revient sur deux évènements tragiques s'étant déroulés aux USA dont l'effroyable tuerie survenue à l'école primaire de Sandy Hook en décembre 2012. Warwick, qui rappelons-le, a vécu au quotidien le conflit nord-irlandais puisqu'il est né en 1966 durant la sinistre période des Troubles opposant les nationalistes aux unionistes (l'IRA et l'UFF (Ulster Freedom Fighters) commettant alors des attentats à répétition), sait de quoi il parle et y appose des paroles terribles du genre "Pourquoi aimes-tu plus tes armes à feu que tes propres enfants ?"

Standing In The Line démarre quant à lui sur une section rythmique particulièrement enlevée. La voix de Warwick se fait gouailleuse et lancinante à la fois. Refrain sympa accompagné de "ouh ouh" dispensables repris ensuite par un solo très bref où notre ami Martucci fait un usage raisonnable de wah wah. En 3 minutes, tout est dit.

Warwick aime les morceaux acoustiques et cela s'entend sur le titre suivant What Will It Take ? interprété en duo avec la fille de l'énormissime Meat Loaf (au sens figuré du terme bien évidemment), Pearl Aday. Un morceau bien sympathique voire "bateau" qui ne va pas non plus transfigurer le répertoire du groupe. Allez hop, on passe car il s'agit là d'un titre acoustique assez quelconque qui n'a pas le cachet d'un Blindsided qui lui figurait sur The Killer Instinct, 2ème album du combo.

Gros riff sur In The Shadow Of The War Machine  qui débouche sur une envolée vocale d'excellente facture de la part du sieur Warwick. Le bassiste Robbie Crane est fortement mis à contribution sur ce morceau, le tout suivi d'une intervention fort à propos du sieur Martucci qui s'est investi à 100% dans le processus de composition pour les titres de cet opus. A ce sujet, dans l'interview publiée dans le Rock Hard n°201 d'octobre 2019, il est rapporté que notre ami Scott, sorti de sa léthargie chronique, a retrouvé le goût pour composer des titres imparables. Intéressant et louable à plus d'un titre, ce In The Shadow Of The War Machine car le groupe a véritablement cherché à explorer des horizons autres que lizziens.

Poisoned Heart brille par son refrain accrocheur teinté çà et là de pincées lizziennes. C'est "gentil", bien fait mais un peu trop poppy à mon goût.

Le mid-tempo Candidate For Heartbreak referme cet opus pour lequel plusieurs écoutes s'avèrent être nécessaires pour s'en approprier les subtilités.

L'on sent bien qu'à travers cet album, nos cinq gaillards ont cherché à se démarquer de la "Maison-Mère Lizzy" (même si l'on en perçoit encore des sonorités, on ne peut pas renier ses origines, non plus), ainsi que je viens juste de l'écrire juste avant, en y insérant des petites pincées de pop, funky, punk et rock bien lourd particulièrement perceptibles tout au long de ce 4ème effort que l'on a envie de réécouter encore et toujours. Ces subtilités que j'évoquais plus haut, s'apprécient après plusieurs écoutes voire se méritent presque pour en déceler les richesses.

Another State Of Grace est un bon album, abordant des sujets sérieux sur des titres plaisants à écouter dans son ensemble mais qui, à mon humble avis, ne revêt pas le caractère DEFINITIF de ses 3 prédécesseurs notamment sur sa seconde moitié peut-être plus inégale (à côté de ça, c'est de "l'inégal de qualité"). Serait-ce dû au départ de Damon Johnson qui, en termes de composition, s'avérait être un orfèvre dans ce domaine ? Certains pourraient être amenés à le penser. Là-dessus, je n'ai aucun avis. Martucci qui s'investit pleinement dans la tâche complexe inhérente au processus de composition, va sans doute s'affirmer, épaulé par Warwick et Gorham, en proposant dans un avenir proche des mélodies encore plus ciselées. Gorham a décidé, lui aussi, de se réinvestir pleinement dans ce domaine. Bien lui en a pris en tout cas.

En attendant, nous espérons une 3ème venue en France (même si rien n'est prévu pour l'instant). Ca nous laissera largement le temps d'en déguster le contenu d'ici là. Allez, je vais me l'faire, mon sandwich-rillettes......avec le carburant offert dans la flasque que l'on déniche dans le coffret collector garni du vinyle, du CD et d'une lithographie. Allez, souhaitez-moi une bonne dégustation quand même......
